Why do I need a coach?

Variety

Exercise scientists have known for years that the key to adaptation is stress and recovery.  Yet, most amateur athletes gravitate toward the same routines.  At first the stress of exercise results in performance gains, but without variety that progress will wane.

Injury prevention

A common mistake among beginning and amateur athletes is to increase intensity and volume too quickly without taking the appropriate steps to get there.   Often, this combination can result in injury and a DNS (did not start) at your next race.  However, even with a good coach injuries can happen; training doesn't happen in a vacuum.  Fortunately, not only does Adam bring knowledge of how to train athletes, but also how to fix them.

Appropriate goal setting

When the new year begins, athletes can become overzealous and set unrealistic race goals.  They may be too ambitious and attempt to race too frequently or attempt a distance that they are not prepared for yet.  A coach can be a source of pragmatism and from experience, know how to balance ambition with success.

Accountability

While some athletes are disciplined enough to stick to a 20-week training plan, some do not.  Sometimes there are legitimate reasons to skip a training day (e.g. illness, weather, family obligations), but sometimes these reasons are excuses or failures to plan.  A coach has experience to know how to refocus an athlete to keep them on the path.

Consistency over time

The most successful athletes are often those who have built a close relationship with a coach over many years.  The athlete trusts the coach and the coach understands what makes the athlete tick.  This type of dance takes years to perfect so choosing a coach should not be taken lightly.
